About 120 years ago, a group of Gujarati’s travelled from Gujarat and settled down in Coimbatore. Since then, they were involved mainly in textile trade. In 1942, this group formed an NGO called Shree COIMBATORE GUJARATI SAMAJ which has been doing yeoman services to its own members and citizens of Coimbatore. Today the Samaj has more than 2200 members.
A lively and pulsating institution operating from one of the most imposing buildings in the area, the Gujarati Samaj has come a long way from its humble beginning, way back in 1942 when it commenced its activities.
Built on Mettupalayam Road (leading to Ooty on the North side and to Kodaikanal, Madurai, Kanyakumari & Rameshwaram on the South side), Coimbatore at a cost of over Rs.150 Lakhs (in 1981-82 and 2000-2001 in two phases), the Gujarati Samaj Bhavan Building is spread over 70000 sq. ft. on a 78 cents land plot. It is indeed a mammoth structure not only in Coimbatore but in the whole of South India and is a fitting edifice to the hardworking Gujarati Community. The Gujarati Samaj, Coimbatore reflects in abundance, the service-mindedness of the Gujarati Community.
The Samaj has also been founded the Shree Baldevdas Kikani Vidyamandir Trust under which it runs Matriculation and CBSE Schools.
The Samaj has also founded Gujarati Mutual Welfare Society, which has a membership of over a 1000 members. All members deposit funds regularly with the Society, which distributes loans to the needy members at low interest rates for their medical, educational, family function needs as well as for vehicle, house and household goods purchase needs.
The Samaj is also having a Ladies Wing and a Youth Wing, named Mahila Mandal and Yuvak Mandal which serve the ladies and youth of our community.
