Gurgaon Ki Awaaz Samudayik Radio Station 107.8 FM broadcasts to over 1.2 million residents in Gurgaon 22 hours a day. Focussing on the predominantly Hindi and dialect-speaking communities in Gurgaon (Haryanvi, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Rajasthani, Marwari, Khari Boli, Garhwali and Kumaoni), the station is a platform for voices normally marginalized by mainstream media channels. Our 5 lakh listeners tune into programs, for several hours at a time while they go about their work, taking active part in talk shows, contributing to program design and production, and shaping a channel that reflects their extremely diverse cultural roots and their concerns around health, education, livelihood, governance, citizenship, entertainment and much more.
Listeners call into our morning Live shows (Gurgaon Ke Haal at 9.30 am IST, Kahani Ki Gatharia at 10 am IST and Gurgaon Live at 10.30 am IST) and a once a week phone-in health show Chahat Chowk on Saturday at 2 pm IST) at our Live Studio numbers +91 9873551078 and +91 8800475080. Listeners also send in their feedback, requests and audio snippets via WhatsApp on +91 9958941408. Off air call-ins are frequent and at +91 124 4087545. Daily broadcast takes a short break between 2 pm and 4 pm every day except Sundays.
Gurgaon Ki Awaaz Samudayik Radio Station is the national capital region’s first and only civil society-run community radio station. We have been broadcasting in the suburban town ofGurgaon just outside the national capital New Delhi since 2009. The community radio station is an integral part of Gurgaon’s media landscape and addresses the media needs of Gurgaon’s predominantly Hindi-speaking population, most of whom are either local villagers or migrant workers.
The station works closely with local government departments like HUDA, MCG, Horticulture Department, Health Department, Education Department, Gurgaon Police, and civil society activists and groups, all of whom are working to make Gurgaon a safe and healthy place to live and work.
Variously known as the “ragini wala channel” because we only broadcast folk music and “Gurgaon FM” because most listeners tune in via their mobile phones or FM sets in their cars, the station stands apart in a media cluttered environment where every FM channel only belts out Bollywood music.
Gurgaon Ki Awaaz is supported by The Restoring Force, an NGO that has been working in Gurgaon’s government schools and rural parts of Rajasthan since 2001.
