There are two kinds of happiness. There's the happiness you feel when a bad time ends and something good comes along, or when something you have been striving for finally comes to fruition, or when an unexpected piece of good fortune comes your way. What you might call the one-off, 'occasion linked' type of happiness. And then there's 'everyday happiness.'
Can you get and stay happy?
The first kind of happiness is only partly within your control. You can make conscious efforts to bring a bad time to an end - but circumstances might be against you. You can put your heart and soul into working for a certain achievement, but then find it doesn't come off after all. And as to those 'lottery win' type occasions - well, there's nothing you can do about that sort of happiness at all (except hope you get some).
Moreover, even if things work out well, and you get some of this sort of happiness (and I hope you do!), research has shown we are not very good at holding on to the beneficial impact. People who suddenly have an amazing piece of good fortune often say they are 'ecstatically happy' and their 'lives have completely changed'. But within six months they will say they are no happier than before that good luck came along.
Happiness - is it just a matter of luck?
From which it would seem to follow that, if you want more happiness in your life, you need an awfully large amount of sheer luck on top of your efforts.
But, in fact, an increased level of everyday happiness is well within your grasp.
Many roads to increased happiness - but how to stay on them?
You have probably already come across many ideas for how to be happier. You will have read about positive thinking, doing stuff you enjoy, having an 'attitude of gratitude', and taking concrete steps to improve your relations and connections with other people. You know that your diet and physical health can affect your mood. And these are indeed all good ways of getting to feel happier.
But all these 'roads to happiness' are also affected by that 'fade' effect. You get used to them, and then their impact seems to decline. Wouldn't it be good if there was a way to establish, and then maintain, an instinctively happy approach to everyday life?
Well, there is.
