So, you want to learn how to draw a horse?

Horses are unique and beautiful animals, but it takes practice for them to turn out that way on your paper. But, with practice and using simple shapes, you can easily begin to learn how to draw a horse.

So Where do You Start?

Horses are best drawn in layers. You can start with the basic shapes and then build upon the basic design layer by layer. By slowly working in your details and making a series of adjustments you will have a beautiful horse in no time.

Start with the Basic Frame!

The basic frame of a horse is two ovals. One oval represents the barrel of the chest. The second oval should be somewhat smaller and at angle to the larger oval. This oval represents the hindquarters of the horse. You can adjust the size of the ovals for the breed of horse you are drawing.

So What's Next?

Next, you will add in the key points of the horse. Horses have a triangular shaped neck, so you will use a triangle for that part of the body. The tip of the triangle will be where your horse's ears are going to be located. Now you will want to draw a small circle for the cheek of the horse, keeping in mind that the "ears" need to be somewhat above this circle. At the end of the small cheek circle you will draw a square for the muzzle.

Legs and Hooves!

Draw two straight lines for the forelegs and two bent lines for the hind legs. The bends in the hind legs represent the hocks of the horse. Draw short sloping lines at the ends of these longer lines to represent the pasterns and the fetlocks (ankles) of the horse. Draw small triangles for the hooves.

Let's Finish It!

Now you can begin filling out the legs and the body. Draw curving lines around the body to show the horse's arched neck, curved throat and various other body features. As you layer features onto your horse you can erase your original lines and create the body of the horse while adding in features such as a mane and tail, eyes, etc. To get more creative you can add in hair and markings as well.
