Hunmanby is a popular village perched on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Surrounded by stunning scenery and beautiful landscapes this bustling village looks down over farmland to North Yorkshire’s famous sea side resort of Filey and Filey Bay.
Once the largest village in Great Britain, Hunmanby lies directly between Scarborough and Bridlington. At one time the main road between the two towns passed through Hunmanby, it now runs closer to Filey.
The village name of Hunmanby originated with the Danes, appearing in the Doomsday book as ‘Hundemanbi’ meaning ‘farmstead of the hounds men’, relating to the hunting down of wolves on the Wolds.
Today Hunmanby still boasts its historic Market Place cross, although it is now headless, signifying the village’s once substantial importance in Yorkshire trade.
The White Swan public house has stood for many centuries in the market place and was a well known and used hostelry in long ago coaching days.
