A. About Prof Abu Bakar Munir.

1. Prof Abu Bakar Munir holds a Master of Law (LLM) from Warwick University, England and his LL.B (Hons) from University Malaya, Malaysia.

2. Prof Abu Bakar has been a Professor of Law at University Malaya where he was Dean of the Law Faculty in 2008/9. He is also Chief Editor of the Journal of Malaysian Comparative Law.

B. Seminars, Conferences and Workshops.

Prof Abu Bakar has been engaged in speaking arrangements globally organized by universities such as John Hopkins, Oxford, Cambridge, MIT, NUS as well as corporate entities such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo etc.

C. Books written.

Prof Abu Bakar has written several books over the last 30 years:
a. Cyberlaw: Policies and Challenges (1992);
b. Privacy and Data Protection (2002);
c. Internet Banking: Law and Practice (2004);
d. Information and Communication Technology Law: State, Internet and Information (2010);
e. Personal Data Protection in Malaysia: Law and Practice (2010);
f. Data Protection Law in Asia (2014) [2nd edition to be released in due course].

D. Advisory Capacity, Notable Memberships and Awards.

1. He holds several Advisory capacities as follows:-

a. Legal Advisor and Data Protection Consultant to the Straits Interactive Pte Ltd, Singapore;
b. Senior Advisor to the Schinder Law Firm in Jakarta, Indonesia,
c. Academic Advisory Council of the Asia Pacific Institute for Digital Economy (APIDE), Tokyo, Japan;
d. The Government of Malaysia as architect of the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act 2010;
e. IT Law Advisor & Principal Consultant to the Government of Dubai, UAE in developing and drafting several IT legislations to facilitate the Dubai Internet City;
f. Prof Abu Bakar is currently assisting the Government of Indonesia in developing their Personal Data Protection Laws.

2. Amongst memberships he is affiliated to are the Asia Pacific Privacy Charter Council (APPCC) and the Asian Privacy Scholars Network (APSN), Australia. He is also one of the founders of the recently established Bali International Arbitration & Mediation Centre.


3. Prof Abu Bakar is a recipient of the Malaysian Cyber Security Awards 2010 (Minister’s Award) as well as the Information Security Visionary of the year award 2010.
