With the current government's 'Make in India' campaign, the manufacturing industry in India has been blessed with a comprehensive attention, resulting in qualitative discussions about its various aspects. Considering the broad spectrum of the manufacturing industry, one of the important yet uncovered facet is - Manufacturing Design. Design, in its most underlying concept, consists of two parts: Style and Substance. While Style: being glitzy, glamorous, and flashy aesthetics, is the most recognizable part, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Substance is what makes Design an important asset and a ubiquitous part of the industry. Design is an amalgamation of various aspects like Research, Vision, Ergonomics, Lifestyle, Technology and even Sociology. From the large and delicate metal birds adorning the sky to the nib of a ballpoint pen, Design affects almost everything in our life making it easier and flexible. While design may seem like an art practiced by a few, it's something that anyone can do. Stripped to it's core, design is the ability to put together incongruous objects with a holistic approach, to achieve a solution and ultimately to improve upon the quality of our lives. Design has a profound impact on how users perceive information, learn new things , judge credibility and usability, and ultimately assign value to a product. To dismiss design as merely ‘visual’ is to make a fundamental mistake which is why we pledge to take ‘Design of Things’ as this year’s theme for Impetus 2016.
