It is a saga of two inveterate dreamers and their indomitable courage and incessant struggle for translating the dream into reality. Back in 1990s when Late A P R Nair was heading an elite English Medium School, Kerala Samajam Model School (he is still the Chairman of it) he had a dream. His dream was a simple one – of making Quality Education accessible to all, as he believes that education is a potent weapon to fight for social parity. Keeping education confined to an elite group of people will not serve that purpose. It is this concept that made him stand apart.
Transforming this dream into reality however, was not at all so simple as that for a man without a coffer or required manpower. But then another dreamer joined him. Mrs. Vijayam Kartha was the Principal of that School. They both vouched for bringing education to the doorstep of those who are either from low-income group of families or living in abject penury. Kerala Public School Trust is their brain child, which is today though basically known as an education hub, is highly regarded for its multi-lateral social and environmental activities.
Immediate on formation of the Trust, they started an English Medium School in a rented house at Mango, on the northern outskirt of Jamshedpur dominated by the members of lower-middle class minority community. Back in 1995 when English medium education was confined to the privileged circle, the opportunity to have access to it with such a low cost elicited huge response.
Impressed by this success story, a group of people from Rairangpur, Orissa came with a proposal to start a School there again in a rented house.
Subsequently, another School, which was run by an individual in a rented premise at Gamharia, in the adjacent district was handed over to the Trust. Today all the three Schools have their own land and buildings.
Seeing the professional and qualitative approach, the Tata Steel came forward to hand over a primary School at Kadma up to Std. IV with about 450 students in 1997, which has been promoted to Plus Two with a total students’ strength of 3000 and a palatial building came up. Similarly, they handed over another Primary School in 1999 with 250 students at Burmamines, which has been upgraded to Class X with 3200 strong student strength with remarkable development in the infrastructure.
Likewise, the Jamshedpur unit of National Metallurgical Laboratory handed over a School building at Agrico with three rooms to the Trust.. Today the School has two blocks of multistoried buildings and awaiting CBSE affiliation.
The credibility of K P S reached to such an extent that when a School at Cable Town was on the threshold of closing down due to withdrawal of sponsorship by a sick industry, the district administration requested Mr. Nair to take over the managing responsibility of that School, which he readily accepted. This Hindi medium school with around 400 students has 750 plus students now.
Finally, the Government of Jharkhand came forward to hand over the managing responsibility of two Residential Tribal Schools also to the Trust.
