You must have often heard about the Japanese art of paper folding 'origami' with a variety of unique shapes like kusudama, kerajianan nantal, even cars. However, you may be less familiar with 'Kirigami', a variation of origami involves folding and cutting paper. The art is also known as left-e, before you may never see Kirigami but do not realize it as in a greeting card with cutout design.
The most striking difference between origami and Kirigami which involves cutting a piece of paper to create a design of the design, while the origami works created in traditional form. In addition, glue and masking tape can be used in Kirigami, but not conventional in the art of origami.
Kirigami may sound synonymous with the art of pop-ups, but the crucial difference between the two is that Kirigami creations made from a sheet of paper, while the pop-up art involves one or more pieces of paper that are glued together with an adhesive. In its basic form, Kirigami involves paper folding and cutting, then leveling cutting to complete a design. Some designs require to fold the paper in two to 12 times! Similar to origami, Kirigami design can be either 2D or 3D. Kirigami for beginners may describe their design sketches on paper before cutting, but traditionally, the artist immediately cut with scissors or a knife.
