Kitab kuning adalah istilah yang disematkan pada kitab-kitab berbahasa Arab, yang biasa digunakan di banyak pesantren sebagai bahan pelajaran. Dinamakan kitab kuning karena kertasnya berwarna kuning.
Sebenarnya warna kuning itu hanya kebetulan saja, lantaran dahulu barangkali belum ada jenis kertas seperti zaman sekarang yang putih warnanya. Mungkin di masa lalu yang tersedia memang itu saja. Juga dicetak dengan alat cetak sederhana, dengan tata letak lay-out yang monoton, kaku dan cenderung kurang nyaman dibaca. Bahkan kitab-kitab itu seringkali tidak dijilid, melainkan hanya dilipat saja dan diberi cover dengan kertas yang lebih tebal.
Namun untuk masanya, kitab kuning itu sudah sangat bagus, ketimbang tulisan tangan dari naskah aslinya.
Sampai hari ini sebenarnya kitab kuning masih ada dijual di toko-toko kitab tertentu. Sebab pangsa pasarnya pun masih ada, meski sudah jauh berkurang dengan masa lalu. Yang menarik, harganya pun sangat bersaing. Bayangkan, kitab-kitab itu hanya dijual dengan harga Rp 5.000-an saja hingga Rp 10.000, tergantung ketebalannya. Padahal isinya tidak kurang ilmiyah dan bagus dari buku-buku mahal yang berharga jutaan. Kalau dibandingkan dengan cetakan modern, uang segitu hanya bisa buat beli buku saku tipis sekali.
Adapun dari sisi materi yang termuat di dalam kitab kuning itu, sebenarnya sangat beragam. Mulai dari masalah aqidah, tata bahasa Arab, ilmu tafsir, ilmu hadits, imu ushul fiqih, ilmu fiqih, ilmu sastra bahkan sampai cerita dan hikayat yang tercampur dengan dongeng. Keragaman materi kitab kuning sesungguhnya sama dengan keragaman buku-buku terbitan modern sekarang ini.
Secara umum, keberadaan kitab-kitab ini sesungguhnya merupakan hasil karya ilmiyah para ulama di masa lalu. Salah satunya adalah kitab fiqih, yang merupakan hasil kodifikasi dan istimbath hukum yang bersumber dari Al-Quran dan As-Sunnah.
