Pese a que Santa Filomena fue una adolescente mártir de los primeros tiempos de la Iglesia, su existencia no fue conocida hasta el 24 de mayo 1802, fecha en que sus restos fueron encontrados en la catacumba de Santa Priscila. El 10 de agosto de 1805 sus reliquias fueron trasladadas a Mugnano del Cardinale (Italia), lugar donde en la actualidad se encuentra su santuario.
