Liquid funk is a subgenre of the drum and bass genre.
Despite using the same bass lines and drum pattern, it contains fewer drum-oriented samples and more progressive synth parts, creating a quieter atmosphere, more aimed at the home listener than at nightclubs. Examples of liquid funk can be found on Good Looking Records, founded by LTJ Bukem (Danny Williamson), although the label is more intellectual.
In 2000, Fabio pioneered a new form of drum and bass he called "liquid funk" by releasing a compilation of the same name on his Creative Source label. She was characterized by influences from disco and house and extensive use of vocals. Not very well known at the beginning, the genre gained wide popularity in 2003-2004, and in 2005 acquired the status of one of the best-selling subgenres of drum and bass with labels such as: Hospital Records, State of the Art Recordings and artists such as: High Contrast. Caliber, Nu: Tone, Solid State, London Elektricity and Logistics. Other labels popular in this scene: Liquid V, Rubik Records.
Intelligent (aka atmospheric drum and bass) and liquid funk are very close, but liquid funk still has some differences. For example, liquid funk has a much stronger influence of Latin American music, disco, jazz and funk, while atmospheric drum and bass has a colder sound in its calm nature and neglects samples of real instruments, replacing them with smooth synth parts.
