Pioneiro no ramo de jornais de distribuição gratuita, o jornal METRÔ NEWS começou a circular na Capital em 14 de setembro de 1974, em um momento histórico para a cidade: o início da operação dos primeiros sete quilômetros de linhas do Metrô de São Paulo.
Enquanto o Metrô inaugurava o trecho entre as estações Jabaquara e Vila Mariana, da Linha 1-Azul, a primeira edição do jornal chegava às bancas, vendido a cinquenta centavos de cruzeiros e com 24 páginas. A manchete da publicação inaugural do periódico, como não poderia deixar de ser, abordava o novo sistema de transporte público. Intitulada "O Metrô, o futuro agora", suas matérias ressaltavam o trabalho de operários, em sua maioria vindos do Nordeste brasileiro, e o avanço de São Paulo ao abrir o primeiro Metrô do Brasil. Entre os destaques, o operador do primeiro trem comercial do sistema, Edson Tukamoto, que ganhou notoriedade.
Durante as últimas décadas, assim como a expansão dos quilômetros de circulação dos trens do Metrô de São Paulo, que hoje atende em média 4,2 milhões de passageiros por dia, o jornal METRÔ NEWS, sediado em Guarulhos, na Grande São Paulo, também ampliou gradativamente sua circulação. Inicialmente distribuído apenas às segundas-feiras, passou posteriormente a circular de segunda a quinta-feira e, finalmente, de segunda a sexta-feira.
