The MYana Explorer guides users along a four-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, with stops that highlight volcanic outcrops and processes of Mt Yana, an ancient stratovolcano of the Cascades arc. Without MYana Explorer, most hikers would not recognize this area as an eroded volcano. The app introduces hikers to the geology of the area to discover the volcanic history that built and then eroded the volcano. Stops along the guided hike include:
Views of Mt. Shasta and the Lassen Volcanic Center
Volcanic debris flow outcrops
Feeder dikes
Lava flows
The Yana Volcanic Center is located approximately 40 km (25 mi) south of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Erosion of Mt Yana over the last 3 million years formed the ridges of the Tuscan Formation in the valley in the Chico area.
Plan your trip today! The best time to visit is between late June and early October when the area is free of snow. The road to the trailhead is unpaved, a high clearance vehicle is recommended. Bring plenty of water, food, sunscreen and your smartphone to use the MYana Explorer app. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. Please check all guidelines from the Lassen National Forest for visiting the area, and follow CDC guidelines for COVID-19 safety.
