The Gulf War (August 2, 1990 – February 28, 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (August 2, 1990 – January 17, 1991), for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (January 17, 1911 – February 28, 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from over 30 countries led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait and the rich oil fields. Coalition forces quickly established air superiority, and a thorough air campaign was waged. The coalition ground campaign drove Iraqi military forces out of Kuwait in less than 100 hours. The war was a decisive coalition victory. Saddam Hussein remained in power and Iraq remained a sovereign state. A noteable battle of the war was the Battle of 73 Easting between a U.S. Army armored cavalry regiment and the Tawakalna Division of Iraqi Republican Guard. The war marks the last time that battleship guns fired in anger.
