Planning a visit to New Zealand? Don’t let a piece of fruit ruin your holiday, or the entire fruit industry!
New Zealand has very strict biosecurity procedures at its airports to prevent the introduction of pests and diseases via items you may bring into the country. These pests and diseases could cause millions of dollars in damage to our country’s primary industries such as horticulture and agriculture. They could also damage our unique environment and wildlife.
The Ministry for Primary Industries have developed the NZ Arrivals app so you can check what needs to be declared to Quarantine Officers at airports, and what you should leave behind at home.
The arrivals app features:
- A list of over 40 potential risk items that may not be allowed into New Zealand
- Clear instructions of what to do with potential risk items when arriving in New Zealand
Biosecurity risk items could include:
- Fruit - Food (fresh or packaged), including ingredients
- Hiking shoes and other items used for outdoor activities such as tents and camping equipment
- Used sports equipment (e.g. golf clubs)
- Souvenirs made from wood, shell, or flowers.
Remember if in doubt: Declare, or Dispose.
Enjoy your visit to New Zealand.
