عام 1997 تأسست جمعية حملة الأزرق الكبير ووضعت مجموعة برامج لمواجهة التحديات البيئية من خلال خطط بسيطة كتنظيف الشاطئ، وتنظيم برامج لرصد سلامة السلاحف البحرية ومكافحة الصيد الجائر، نشر الوعي البيئي على نطاق واسع، وتنظيم عملية ادارة الشاطئ العام.
ان حملة الأزرق الكبير هي جمعية بيئية لبنانية وغير حكومية تسعى إلى حماية وتحليل ومراقبة البيئة الساحلية والبحرية من سوء الاستخدام أو التدهور وتسعى للعمل بنشاط على حل القضايا والمشاكل البيئية.
تعمل الجمعية ضمن نطاق الوطن والبلدان المجاورة: قبرص ومصر وفلسطين وسوريا. واليوم، وفي ظل دعم واسع من المنظمات الدولية، نهدف إلى النمو بشكل أسرع من أجل تغطية منطقة جغرافية أوسع على نطاق البحر الأبيض المتوسط وغيرها من المناطق.
