The planisphere is an analog computing instrument, which is used for the representation of the sky in a specific place, for anytime and any day of the year. Also, it can be used for various astronomical calculations, like the calculation of rise and set of the stars or of the Sun.

The planisphere is the ''descendan'' of the astrolabe. It was invented in 150 B.C. by Hipparchus, an ancient Greek astronomer. It constitutes one of the most fundamental astronomical instruments, which has been used by astronomers, seamen and astrologers during the centuries.

The use of traditional astronomical instruments helps in the better understanding of astronomical phenomena. The interpretation of phenomena, such as the seasonal change, the change of day length, the fact that there are some constellations that are visible every night, while others only during specific months of the year etc. becomes easier through the use of planisphere.
