Slovenia's rivers offer exciting yet safe rafting adventures. The most suitable river for rafting is the Soča, a clear, emerald-green river flowing through a beautiful valley. The Soča (in Slovene) or Isonzo (in Italian) (other names Friulian: Lusinç, archaic German: Sontig, Latin: Aesontius or Isontius) is a 138 kilometres long river that flows through western Slovenia (96 kilometres) and northeastern Italy (43 kilometres). An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres. The river runs past the towns of Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (where it is crossed by the Solkan Bridge, which is the second-longest stone arch in the world and the longest stone arch among train bridges) and Gorizia, entering the Adriatic Sea close to the Italian town of Monfalcone.
In 2008 the Soca Valley became the first destination in Slovenia to be selected by the European Commission as a European Destination of Excellence.
You can also experience adrenaline-boosting raft rides in the company of a guide on the upper part of the Sava, on the Savinja in Štajerska, on the Kolpa in Bela Krajina and on the Krka in Dolenjska. Rafting centres will provide all the necessary equipment and arrange transport back to the starting point.
