About Recon Thessaloniki Android App

This is an experimental landmark recognition app for the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, developed within the Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery group (http://mlkd.csd.auth.gr) of the department of Informatics (http://www.csd.auth.gr) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The core functionality was developed in Java by Eleftherios Spyromitros-Xioufis while the android adaptation was performed jointly with Evangelos Christelis.

The app can currently recognize 17 different Points of Interest (POIs) around the city of Thessaloniki, using modern machine learning and computer vision algorithms. The app is meant to help a visitor of the city, identify and get informed about the most important landmarks just by capturing them with his android smartphone. One of the most unique features of this app is that all the processing is taking place on the smartphone. Therefore, Internet access or GPS info are not needed.

Since the app is still in its early development, it is not as fancy, accurate and robust as you might expect, but we are working on these! Nevertheless, we hope you like it and would be interested to have your feedback!
