About RPharmS-iRX Android App

RPharmS–iRx is an electronic learning tool for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professionals for use on smartphones and tablets. It has been designed to help students and healthcare professionals develop their knowledge and understanding of using medicines safely and effectively. It does this by providing users with the means to record information about key medicines (with an emphasis on integrating clinical therapeutics with the underpinning basic science) onto a handheld device.
The app contains a formulary of approximately 200 commonly prescribed and specialist medicines (indicated by an S symbol), each with an editable template. Users can populate each medicine template with a range of scientific and therapeutic information under specific ‘basic science’ and ‘BRAINS & AIMS’ headings (see below). Data can be recorded in the app using a variety of methods including: free text, direct link to websites, photos, and voice recordings, allowing students, trainees and professionals to complement text with drug structures, and links to abstracts for example. Ultimately, users produce a personal, comprehensive, formulary of information about drugs and medicines. For any assessment purposes, completed templates can be emailed to tutors for marking and feedback.

Disclaimer
RPharmS–iRx is principally a learning tool and a personal formulary. It is a repository of information that is entered by the user, and this information will not have been through a formal clinical checking process. Therefore, when making clinical prescribing decisions, published sources of information should always be referred to (such as the BNF, local guidelines).

Acknowledgements
RPharmS–iRx has been developed jointly by the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and the School of Medicine of King's College London, in partnership with King’s Health Partners’ Pharmaceutical Sciences Clinical Academic Group. This project has been supported by a grant from the College Teaching Fund, King's College London.
BRAINS & AIMS and the associated mnemonics, were developed by Dr Andrew Webb as a structured and memorable approach, based on 10 key principles of prescribing chosen largely from the core learning outcomes suggested in the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) core curriculum.
The Top 100 Drugs is an evidence-based list of drugs/drug classes most commonly prescribed by Foundation Year Doctors on medical and surgical wards, and in general practice developed by Dr Andrew Webb and colleagues with the aim to focus on these to develop competence in prescribing (Baker E. et al., BJCP 2011). Other more specialist drugs are also included here, as you need to be aware of their important characteristics.
