L'origine di questa devozione ha origine nel XIII secolo quando i monaci cistercensi svilupparono una nuova forma di preghiera che chiamarono rosario, perché la comparavano ad una corona di rose mistiche donate alla Madonna. Fu resa popolare da san Domenico, che nel 1214 ricevette il primo rosario della Vergine Maria come strumento per l'aiuto dei cristiani contro le eresie.
Da quel giorno ad oggi diversi Papi hanno invitato più volte tutti i cristiani ad utilizzarla.
In più apparizioni la Madonna stessa ha indicato il Rosario come la preghiera più necessaria per il bene dell'umanità. Nell'apparizione a Lourdes del 1858, la Vergine aveva una lunga corona del Rosario al braccio. Brief history of this prayer:
The origin of this devotion originated in the thirteenth century when the Cistercian monks developed a new form of prayer, which they called rosary, because comparavano a crown of roses mystical donated to Madonna. It was popularized by St. Dominic, who in 1214 received the first rosary of the Virgin Mary as a tool to aid the Christians against heresies.
From that day to this different Popes they have repeatedly urged all Christians to use.
In most appearances, Our Lady herself has indicated the Rosary as the prayer most needed for the good of humanity. In the apparition in Lourdes in 1858, the Virgin had a long rosary arm. In 1917, in Fatima as in recent years in Medjugorje, Our Lady invited and urged to pray the Rosary every day.
