Samara, which from January 27, 1935 to January 25, 1990 was called Kujbyšev, in honor of the Soviet revolutionary Valerian Vladimirovič Kujbyšev, is the sixth largest city in Russia. It is located in the central eastern part of European Russia, known as the Volga Federal District, at the confluence of the Volga River and the Samara River.
