Savate (French Pronunciation: Savat), also known as Boxe Francaise, is a martial art that developed in France that uses hands and feet. Savate combines Western boxing techniques and some kicking techniques. Unlike Muay Thai or Silat using knee and elbow attacks, Savate only uses a kick. The word "Savate" in French means "Old Shoes". Savate is probably the only martial art that allows its brawlers to wear shoes during training and fighting. Male brawlers are called savateurs and female fighters are called savateuse.
Today, the martial arts of Savate are well known all over the world, from Australia to the United States and from Finland to Great Britain. Savate Modern divides the competition into three levels: Assault, Pre-Combat, and Combat. Assault advocates a focus in technique and prohibits over-attack. Pre-Combat allows attacks with full force provided that the Fighter uses head and body armor. The Combat is the most intense level, which prohibits Fighters using any protector except the genital shield and teeth.
Unlike most martial arts that use a belt to mark the level of a person in the martial arts, such as: Taekwondo, Karate, Krav Maga, etc., Savate uses gloves to mark the level in his martial arts. As for marking levels in Savate are as follows: Blue Gloves, Green Gloves, Red Gloves, White Gloves, Yellow Gloves and Silver Gloves Level I, II, and III.
