The idea of shared decision making (SDM) is well known in medical field but it is not well acknowledged in the dental practices. SDM is a model for actively involving the patients in the clinical decision-making process by providing patients with the best currently available clinical evidence regarding expected treatment outcomes and allowing for the clarification of patient and practitioner preferences. Decision aids are also assisting in sharing relevant information to patient that has different need of information . SDM not only covers the inclusion of the ethical diversities involve in patient-centred care, but also the quality improvements in decision-making process.
The first objective of this study was to develop and test a Decision Aid (Mobile Apps) for chair side use to help in explains treatment choices, benefits, risks, prognosis when fixed prosthodontics is indicated. The second objective of this study is to compare the patients’ dental knowledge, satisfaction and anxiety level by using Decision Aid and standard care. The hypothesis is that the use of decision aid will increase knowledge of the patient, increase the patient satisfaction and may reduce anxiety level when compared to standard discussion and informed consent process. Patients and clinicians can be expected to have different opinions about the value of potential treatment outcomes, by using the decision aid it can reduce decisional conflict, reduce number of patients remaining undecided for their treatment options and improve agreement between values and choice. Clinicians are most often focus with the technical aspects of dental treatment while patients want to remove the symptoms of the oral disease that they had.
