The English poet and printer William Blake first published 'Songs of Experience' in 1794, hand-etching and hand-coloring each copy. A collection of 26 short, lyrical poems of the Romantic style, 'Songs of Experience' concerns itself with the darker side of human nature; themes such as hatred, revenge (A Poison Tree), and evil (A Divine Image) are explored. Many of the poems in this volume are binary oppositions of similarly titled lyrics in 'Songs of Experience'. Though he was never afforded such acknowledgement during his lifetime, Blake is now widely regarded as one of the greatest poets of his age.
