Taekwondo (also spelled Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do) is a Korean martial art that is also a national sport of Korea. This is one of the world's most popular martial arts competed in the Olympics.
In Korean, only for Tae means "kicking or destroying with the feet"; Kwon means "boxing"; and Do means "way" or "art". Thus, Taekwondo can be rendered freely as "the art of the hands and feet" or "the way" or "the way the feet and fist". The popularity of taekwondo has led to this art evolving in various forms. Like many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of fighting, martial arts, sports, fitness, entertainment, and philosophy.
Although there are many doctrinal and technical differences among taekwondo organizations, this art generally emphasizes kicks made from a movable attitude, using greater range of power and leg strength to paralyze the opponent from a distance. In a match, the 45-degree, forward, ax and side kicks are the most widely used; The kicks include jumping kicks, spinning, skipping and dropping, often in the form of a combination of multiple kicks. The taekwondo practice also includes a thorough system of punches and defenses by hand, but generally does not emphasize grappling.
Three materials in the exercise
Poomsae or series of stances is a series of basic movement techniques of attack and self defense, which is done against an imaginary opponent, by following a particular diagram. Each poomse movement sequence diagram is based on eastern philosophy that illustrates the spirit and perspective of the Korean nation.
Kyokpa or solving technique is an engineering exercise by using targets / inanimate objects, to measure the ability and accuracy of the technique. Objects that are usually used include wooden boards, bricks, tiles, and sometimes using soft objects such as paper. The technique is done with kicks, punches, sabetan, even puncture fingers.
Kyorugi or battle is an exercise that applies basic motion techniques or poomse, where two people fight each other to practice attack techniques and foot defense techniques.
