Ibnu Katsir menulis tafsir Qur'an yang terkenal yang bernama Tafsir Ibnu Katsir. Hingga kini, tafsir Alquran al-Karim sebanyak 10 jilid ini masih menjadi bahan rujukan dalam dunia Islam.

Tafsir Qur'an ini dianggap sebagai ringkasan dari tafsir sebelumnya oleh al-Tabari, Tafsir al-Tabari. Hal ini terutama populer karena menggunakan hadits untuk menjelaskan setiap ayat dan bab dari Al-Qur'an.

Metode yang diginakan Ibnu Katsir dalam menafsirkan Al-Qur'an, yakni:

- Tafsir yang paling benar adalah tafsir Alquran dengan Alquran sendiri.
- Selanjutnya bila penafsiran Alquran dengan Alquran tidak didapatkan, maka Alquran harus ditafsirkan dengan hadis Nabi Muhammad, sebab menurut Alquran sendiri Nabi Muhammad memang diperintahkan untuk menerangkan isi Alquran.
- Jika yang kedua tidak didapatkan, maka Alquran harus ditafsirkan oleh pendapat para sahabat karena merekalah orang yang paling mengetahui konteks sosial turunnya Alquran.
- Jika yang ketiga juga tidak didapatkan, maka pendapat dari para tabiin dapat diambil.

Interpretation of the text is considered as a summary of the earlier tafsir by al-Tabari, Tafsir al-Tabari. It is especially popular because it uses hadith to explain each verse and chapter of the Qur'an.

The method diginakan Ibn Kathir in interpreting the Qur'an, namely:

- Interpretation of the most correct interpretation of the Koran is the Koran itself.
- Furthermore, if the interpretation of the Koran by the Koran is not obtained, then the Koran must be interpreted with the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, the Koran itself because, according to the Prophet Muhammad was ordered to explain the contents of the Koran.
- If the latter is not obtained, then the Koran must be interpreted by the opinion of friends because they're the people who know their social context decline in the Qur'an.
- If the third is not obtained, the opinion of the Successors can be taken.
