The court physician Heo Jun (1539–1615) compiled the Dongui Bogam, a comprehensive collection of medical knowledge and practices in Korean medicine, referencing it from over 200 East Asian medical texts. He began this work in 1597 under the orders and sponsorship of King Seonjo of ancient Korea, completing it in 1610 during the second year of Gwanghae's reign. The first edition was published in 1613 and distributed in 25 volumes. The Dongui Bogam was widely read and printed after its release, not only in Korea but also across East Asia, including China and Japan. It remains a significant reference in contemporary traditional medicine. In 2009, it was added to UNESCO's Memory of the World list with the appreciation of its focus on public health and preventive medicine, making it the first medical book to receive this recognition. The three original, undamaged copies of the first edition have been designated as first-degree national treasures in Korea.
