About UbiHub™ Android App

UbiHub is a showcase application for the prototypical implementations of next generation Ubiquitous Computing applications and services. At its current stage, UbiHub supports the real-time simulation of various context features for mobile devices like the location and visible radio networks. Given the simulation, developers and demonstrators of location or context-aware applications are able to test or showcase their Apps without leaving the lab.

Note: Developer settings need to be activated on the mobile device

How to use the simulation feature?

In order to make use of the simulation feature, UbiHub has to connect to the CATLES service, a publicly available service for the provision of simulated context features for mobile devices. Once UbiHub is connected, the developer or demonstrator has to continuously inform the CATLES service about the virtual whereabouts of the mobile device so that CATLES is able to supply the mobile device with the correct location-dependent environmental features. This is accomplished via the CATLES Simulator UI (accessible at http://ubicom.snet.tu-berlin.de/catles/simulator_ui/) in which the user is able to interactively control an avatar within a 3D representation of the world. Given the location of the avatar, CATLES determines the correct location-dependent characteristics of radio signals that need to be simulated for the mobile device.

More information on how to use the simulation feature can be found on the website of CATLES: http://ubicom.snet.tu-berlin.de/catles/demo.html).

What kind of context features are supported?

• Location with dynamic accuracy
• WiFi hotspots with dynamic received signal strength and visibility
• Cellular networks with dynamic received signal strength
• Activity of the user (e.g. walking or driving)

What’s next?

In upcoming versions, UbiHub will integrate a crowdsensing service to collect radio signal fingerprints for a publicly accessible repository. Additionally, UbiHub will act as a client for the next generation of proactive location-based services, commonly known as Geofencing 2.0. A soon as these features are successfully tested UbiHub will get an update.

More Information

UbiHub is developed by the Ubiquitous Computing Group of the Service-centric Networking chair at the Technische Universität Berlin (Institute of Technology Berlin). The chair is also part of the T-Labs (Telekom Innovation Laboratories), a public-private-partnership between the Technische Universität Berlin and the Deutsche Telekom. The simulation feature of UbiHub was developed with the goal to test, evaluate and showcase context-aware mobile applications without leaving the lab. This work was supported by the EIT digital FlashPoll activity and the EIT High Impact Initiative Street Smart Retail.UbiHub is a showcase application for the prototypical Implementations of next generation ubiquitous computing applications and services.
