ABOUT CARLOW
Carlow, once the capital of Ireland, is conveniently located just an hour from Dublin and is centred in the heart of the Sunny South East. Carlow has beautiful, un-spoilt countryside, great for walking/cycling and is complimented by amazing gardens such as Altamont, Duckett's Grove and The Arboretum to name a few. The Barrow Way, perhaps one of Carlow's most prized assets, is a towpath along the River Barrow which was once used by horses pulling barges. Now a beautiful walking route stretching 113km, it was selected in the top 5 visitor attractions by the judges of "The Irish Times Best Days Out in Ireland 2015" competition.
Carlow is known as The Dolmen County thanks to its two perfectly preserved dolmens (portal tombs), The Haroldstown Dolmen and the Brownshill Dolmen. The latter's capstone is reputed to be the heaviest in Europe weighing in at an estimated 100 tonnes. The ruins of the many castles are dotted throughout the countyside including Carlow Castle, Black Castle and Ballymoon Castle. Huntington Castle, originally built in the 17th century is a magnificent, perfectly maintained castle and is open to the public during summer months. Carlow has a great mix of old and new including Carlow County Museum (County Museum of the Year 2014-2015) and the VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art boasting 4 world class galleries and a 320 seat theatre.
