About What the Helsinki Android App

A photo-based journey to the Finnish capital by a local with an emphasize on places near your current location.

Today the app lets you

- Identify what you see in front of you and what is nearby
- Find places to visit by browsing the content by topic or on the map
- See what the city looked like in the past
-- Signe Brander's photos from early 1900's (Helsinki City Museum)
-- World War II photos from SA-kuva
-- Archive photos from YLE, Society of Swedish Literature in Finland, Sports museum, ...
- Includes more than 150 photos already
- No internet connection required (once Google Maps has loaded Helsinki map)

Future versions of the app will contain

- Improved coverage of the city with frequent updates
- More interesting places and Helsinki stories
- Integrations to Helsinki related data like weather, events, timetables
- Improved usability and reliability of the app
- Improved quality of photographs
- Improved visual appearance of the app

This is a multi-year experiment to see what can be achieved when author’s interests photography, travel, Helsinki, history and software development are combined.
